Mold needs moisture to grow. EPA recommends fixing leaks and other moisture problems, removing mold, and drying water-damaged materials promptly - generally within 24–48 hours to help prevent growth.
For an area smaller than about 10 square feet, EPA says occupants can often handle cleanup themselves, while extensive water damage or larger areas call for additional guidance. The size threshold is not a guarantee of safety: sewage contamination, hidden damage, HVAC contamination, and individual health concerns may require professional help.
Cleaning without correcting the moisture problem can allow mold to return. Follow the official guide for material-specific cleanup and consult a qualified professional when uncertain. This is agency guidance, not a diagnosis.
